This is a truly excellent B&B in a lovely quiet location and delightful garden. Ann and Martin are the most welcoming hosts where nothing is too much trouble. Our bedroom was spacious and comfortable with an equally spacious ensuite. The delicious breakfast provided a great choice - and the home made bread a triumph! We would definitely choose to stay here again.

Tips:

Close to the town of Lewes. Charleston and Farleys House and gallery are also nearby. Not too far from Glyndebourne and Ann offered to pre-arrange taxis if necessary.

We cannot fault White Lodge. We're not natural B&Bers but this experience could change our view. The hosts clearly take their project very seriously and make every effort to provide whatever help you might need during your stay. The bedrooms/bathrooms are very well appointed and the breakfast is both superb and beautifully presented, with a multitude of choices to cover all dietary requirements.

Tips:

We stayed just one night for a visit to Glyndebourne and were handed a laminated map to help us with the route including, on the reverse and very often forgotten, the return route to get us back to White Lodge again! No time for other local outings, I'm afraid.

This really is a first class B & B with everything that you could possibly want. Welcoming, spotlessly clean, very comfortable and with delicious breakfasts. A very calm and relaxing feel to the place. Would highly recommend it.

Tips:

It is ideally placed if attending Glyndebourne, but also lots of gardens near by, Sheffield Park, Borde Hill, Wakehurst Place and others. The delightful town of Lewes is only a few miles away and well worth a visit, with it's individual shops, castle, several churches and lovely Southover Grange gardens. Not far from the coast and the wonderful Seven Sisters chalk cliffs.

Everything is of the highest quality. Our room was wonderful, so comfortable and elegantly furnished, and the en-suite bathroom super modern. We loved it. Our hosts, Ann and Martin were most welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. Lovely a la carte breakfasts, all made with locally sourced products. White lodge is an exceptional B&B and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there.

Tips:

Lewes is close by and offers excellent restaurants and pubs. Glyndebourne for opera lovers is only about 15 minutes drive from White Lodge, as is Charleston House (home to Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant and members of the Bloomsbury Set until Vanessa's death in 1961) and Monks House (once the country home of Virginia and Leonard Woolf - now a National Trust property). The famous Bluebell Vintage railway is less than half an hour away.

This was our second visit to White Lodge. We stayed for 2 nights in the Woodland Room which is larger than the downstairs room in which we stayed last year. Ann and Martin are superb hosts-all possible needs are anticipated. Breakfast choices are extremely comprehensive and beautifully cooked. The location is calm and tranquil and yet near to both Brighton and Lewes. Glyndebourne is only 15 minutes away. I recommend White Lodge wholeheartedly and we hope to return next year.

Tips:

There is a host of information about local attractions provided by Ann and Martin There are lots of National Trust properties in the area. We went to Sissinghurst last year and Sheffield Park this time.

Ann & Martin were most welcoming and friendly. They went out of their way to make our stay a memorable one. We would thoroughly recommend White Lodge to anyone visiting the Lewes area.

Ann and Martin make you feel very welcome, lovey fresh local home cooked breakfast and special little touches like the homemade cakes to have with coffee in the room. We will certainly stay again

Truly couldn’t fault anything about this B and B. Everything was of very high quality and Ann and Martin were very welcoming and helpful. Homemade cake and tea on arrival, amazing breakfast choice, even gave us the recipe for homemade bread, as well as suggestions and directions for different places to eat each night. Definitely hope to return. Such a peaceful spot too!

I stayed at White Lodge with my husband and two friends, for the Lewes Fireworks. We had a wonderful time. The house is fabulous and the proprietors are very friendly and knowledgeable and work very hard to make your stay comfortable. The accommodation is superb and the food is fresh and delicious. Ann and Martin pre-booked all of our taxi rides, gave great advice on how to get the best out of our time there, as Lewes gets very busy around the time of the fireworks. I would highly recommend the White Lodge B & B.

We have just returned from four days and nights at White Lodge – what a treat! Anne and Martin have created a 5 star B&B which combines in equal measure comfort, modern design, idyllic surroundings, great breakfasts and unobtrusive attention to the detail of their guests’ needs. If you are looking for a traditional, chintzy English cottage with roses round the door then White Lodge is not for you. However, if you delight in modern design, spare but beautifully executed interior décor and outstanding craftsmanship you’ll love it. Breakfasts are substantial, generous and locally sourced – great scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, eggs Benedict, homemade sourdough and delicious Irish wheat bread (Anne will give you the recipe if you ask). You’ll be greeted with tea and cake on your arrival, supplied with a chocolate brownie in your room when you get back from Glyndebourne (“just in case you are hungry”) and brought iced water, elderflower cordial and a fan to keep you cool on the hottest day of the year. You’ll be provided with maps of local walks in the ancient beech woods surrounding the property, as well as driving routes to local pubs and the opera house, and there’s a wealth of local information and advice available. I can’t recommend White Lodge too strongly.

Tips:

Lots of good local pubs for evening meals, plus all the delights of East Sussex - Brighton, Seven Sisters,. Ash down Fo rest, National Trust properties, etc.

A beautiful, professionally run B&B, with as added bonus .... no not the nice garden and even nicer private (!) forest at the back, no not the delicious breakfast, no not the very nice hosts ... these are alle excellent without any doubt. But the main attraction: the two cats who are happy to receive your cuddles!! We'll be back, for sure.

From the moment we arrived to our departure everything was just perfect. Ann greeted us and showed us around and made sure that we knew how to operate everything. She offered us afternoon tea with the most delicious Gluten Free Brownie. Breakfast was all freshly cooked and there was a great choice for all, including again Gluten Free which is so important when you are Coeliac, so I am truely grateful for the care given. The bedroom was spacious, bedding fantastic and brilliant walk in shower. What more could you ask for. Ann and Martin were just perfect. Thank you so much.

Perfect home from home, although White Lodge is the kind of hone we'd all love to have! Superbly comfortable rooms with power showers and excellent beds. Ann has thought if everything with attention to detail: fresh milk in rooms, plus mineral water and water for the kettle. You can tell Ann has done a lot of travel herself and thought of what items are really helpful. Breakfast is outstanding and the home made fruit compote a real treat.

Our favorite B&B ever. We never go the same place twice and we just came back from our second and are already looking forward to our third weekend break at White Lodge. The rooms and grounds are gorgeous and comfortable in every detail. The hosts are relaxed and helpful and pleasant. And the breakfast is absolutely out of this world. There are lovely country walks nearby.

Tips:

If you want to have more than a drink or two out, arrange for a ride home as the many delicious restaurants are a short drive away. We loved eating at the Blacksmiths Arms. Call ahead to book and let them know if you have any dietary requirements (gluten free, vegetarian, etc.)

Fantastic breakfast tailored to dietary requirements. I'm sure we will return! Thanks.

Tips:

Trust the host's recommendations for a good evening meal out! We had a reason to go to Lewes which is conveniently close. Also briefly visited Sheffield Park and Garden, which I think, on a nice day, would be a lovely outing. And there's always the Bluebell railway!!

We had wonderful stay in White Lodge. Ann and Martin are absolutly delicious and really took care of us more than we could expect. Rooms are very nice and we love decoration. Atmosphere in the house is peaceful and we really enjoyed breakfast with other guest (Hi john and Jacky!). We thank you both for your welcome. We fell like living in friend's house during our stay. More than a stay, we had peaceful rest with you. We will come back and take the chance to see you again in your beautiful house. Kindest regards Annie, Jean-Francois & Maxenxe.

Tips:

We really advise you ask for Ann's fresh fruit salad and Martin's marmelade for breakfast. There are great walks and many nice pubs around. Better asking Ann to book for you and you will enjoy nice welcome every where you go within her network.

An absolutely beautifully kept place. We loved the friendly feel to the place, with the cats in situ. The food was amazing (Richard is quite a fussy person with regards to his cooked eggs and he had no complaints!). Vegetarian sausage was offered, but Richard was not too keen on it (fussy eater!). The fresh fruit at breakfast was so fresh and juicy. The homemade sourdough toast was excellent. It was wonderful watching the birds in the garden from the bed. A very tranquil, peaceful stay. You were both very friendly and helpful and it was lovely chatting about the history of White Lodge. We also really loved the freshly baked cake each day - brilliant!

Tips:

Lewes Castle and Southover Gardens with the Sussex Guild gallery are good places to visit. There are lots of antique shops in Lewes and Brighton. We ate in Bills restaurant and ASK, which we are familiar with (they offer vegetarian choices which we like).

Breakfast was perfectly freshly presented and delicious. Ann and Martin were super helpful.

This is a superb b&b. This was our second stay this year and returning guests are the best recommendation. Ann and Martin are perfect hosts. The house is modern, very clean and beautifully designed. The rooms are perfect. The attention to detail and the investment in quality fittings make staying here a real pleasure. Did I mention the breakfasts ? No ? Well the choice is immense and the preparation immaculate. I wouldn't stay anywhere else in this area

Ann and Martin are perfect hosts, NOTHING is too much trouble for them, even a pair of secateurs! This was our second visit and the standard is still very high, our room was ready and cooled down when we arrived early and as the weather was so hot there was a choice of the duvet or just a sheet, it is these little things that make all the difference. Once again, thank you for a fantastic stay, we will be back!

We stayed for 6 nights during Glyndebourne and Anne and Martin were perfect hosts. Breakfast was outstanding, there was always a warm welcome and good advice on things to do and where to go. The facilities including patio and roof deck were superb and the room was spotless with all the modern amenities you need including a Dyson fan. Easy car parking and good location for Glyndbourne, Lewes, Brighton, the coast and the South Downs. Lynne and John

Tips:

Charla was an excellent taxi driver, always on time and good value for money. The Jolly Sportsman was the best food with beer straight from the cask and a nice garden. The Five Bells just up the road was good but did get crowded so book in advance. Thee are also some good walks nearby - ask Anne. There are also several National Trust properties nearby with beautiful gardens including The clergy House in Alfriston, Virginia Wolf's House and Sheffield Park.

This is the best B&B we have ever encountered. Ann and Martin invite guests to share their beautiful home. We felt more like house guests than paying guests. We stayed at the White Lodge for two nights and its was an amazing getaway from the busy city. The B&B is set in an idyllic surrounding, with Cooksbridge & Lewes in close distance. There is lovely walks in the surrounding areas and the hosts are full of knowledge so can advise you where the best places are. The hosts are very welcoming and ensured you have a restful stay from the welcoming, stunning rooms, vast range for breakfast (all ingredients from local suppliers, which we managed to purchase before leaving) and the lovely home cooked brownies left in our room. We had a wonderful country break and we would highly recommend staying here.

Tips:

The Rainbow Inn is close to the B&B and the food is lovely. Bring your walking boots as there is loads of public footpaths which guide you to picturesque settings. We advise driving if you want to go to the local town, however if you just want to enjoy the coutryside the hosts were willing to pick you up and drop you off at the station/local bar.

Have stayed in many hotels and b&bs over the years and have never felt the need to leave a comment good or bad however this time I felt I needed to share my experience. The house is absolutely fantastic set in beautiful location making it a perfect base to plan our stay. The room and facilities were second to none with Ann being perfect host. This is not your normal b&bs and would recommend to anyone. Gary and Allison Williams (Liverpool)

Tips:

Having arrived later than expected due to M25 car park we emailed Ann on route could she book us a table at local restaurant . The restaurant The Rainbow who kindly kept kitchen open until our late arrival. Anyone who does decide to eat at above they must sample the best tasted mushroom soup ever.

Stayed at White Lodge for our Anniversary - well looked after! Beautiful refurbished building to a high spec. Met by Ann - great host, even provided us with some Tea and Brownies on arrival (yum!). Warm clean, free wifi, high end spec room, good facilities and great rainwater drench walk in shower. Comfy bed - great sleep. Ann even gave us a lift to the Rainbow Pub to ensure we were looked after by Tash - who not only gave us a great dinner but also a lift home! Breakfast was amazing - Sourdough & Eggs (my favourite!) - although plenty of other options for others. Proper Coffee. Recommend A+++++. Would def. come back again and recommend others. Room Tip: We stayed in Woodland view room - but all the rooms looked good.

25th October 2015:

We stayed for three nights in the Woodland room. It is large and comfortable with two upholstered chairs, good lighting, lots of clothes hangers, a big window with a view of the woods, blackout curtains and a comfortable bed and pillows. The room has a tea pot and kettle and a large selection of teas. Each day there was fresh milk and baked goods. Especially appreciated were brownies straight from the oven when we returned wet and cold, having been caught in a sudden shower. The bathroom is roomy with storage under the sink and a fogless mirror. The shower is big and has controls set out of the flow of water so that it can be turned on without being blasted by either hot or cold water. Ann is warm, personable and helpful. She has a large collection of brochures about attractions in the area and is a good source of information herself. She is extremely kind and went to great lengths to ensure her guests were comfortable. She has two beautiful cats, even if they were sleek and shiny from controlling the rabbit population. White Lodge was easy to find. There's a large white sign as well as a light at the entrance. There are two pubs nearby with good food. We highly recommend it.

Tips:

There are many enjoyable places within a 30 minute drive. The two nearby pubs - Five Bells and the Rainbow Inn - are comfortable and have good food. Although Five Bells is slightly better (take a sweater as they keep it cool). Ann knows the area and made several suggestions that worked for us.

Attention to detail in everything was fabulous - even down to the frilly shower cap! The bed was extremely comfortable, the towels and robes superb and all the fixtures and fitting of highest quality. The breakfast selection was amazing - everything you could think of AND MORE. The shower was fantastic and so easy to use. We hope to go to Glyndebourne again next year and will certainly be returning.

What a wonderful stay. Ann & Martin's renovation into The White Lodge B&B, open only six months, is perfection. The house - modern, two stories with a top sundeck - sits in 10 acres of woodland on a quiet road with a roomy car park. Everything is first class. The three large bedrooms (one on ground floor) are decorated in a sleek, minimalist style with wonderful en-suite bathrooms. The owner's guide to the house is exemplary. The list of breakfast options is huge, including Eggs Benedict and wonderful sliced fresh fruit "salad". The downstairs lounge area is available for use. Ann, previously a business executive for Pepsi, is so friendly and helpful. When booking I mentioned I was visiting Vanessa Bell's Charleston, near Lewes. As a fortuitous coincidence, the young woman who helps Ann works as a guide on Sundays there. She shared information about the family and the facility that made my visit extra special. I could rave on much longer, but this review title says it all. If you are going to be driving in this area, you couldn't find a better B&B.

Just completed a wonderful four night stay. Ann, the owner & hostess, could not have been better. She was friendly, helpful and a wonderful baker. The B & B is modern and very clean. Our bed was comfortable with crisp cotton bedding. We had a lovely view of the garden with many birds. WiFi connection very good. Breakfast was terrific - fresh fruit salad, fresh juices, breads made by Ann, organic local cheeses, organic eggs cooked as you like. Ann even located the non-fat plain yogurt I eat for breakfast every morning. She was helpful with local restaurant recommendations and printing maps of local attractions in Lewes. I highly recommend the White Lodge B & B if you are visiting East Sussex.

In 50 years of travelling this is the best B&B we've stayed in by a country mile. It's so stylish comfortable and clean it's more like a top end boutique hotel. The bathroom is to die for: huge walk in shower, high quality fittings and constantly changing towels. The main features of a B&B are the bed - beautifully comfortable, and the breakfast - just outstanding. You can order virtually anything you want the day before so that Ann can shop for the freshest ingredients, and the fruit salad was utterly delicious and full of the best and most expensive fruit available. I thought I made the best brownies in the world but clearly Ann does.

White Lodge is a very high class, high spec B & B and Ann and Martin are lovely hosts. The reason we've only given 4 stars for facilities is because we don't like the communal table for breakfast. We don't usually speak to each other this early in the morning, let alone strangers! A couple of things we felt were missing in the room was a full length mirror and a box of tissues. Stopped here for one night with my wife whilst in the area - having found it via Trip Adviser. To call it a B&B however doesn't really do the White House justice! Anne and Martin have not compromised on quality when it comes to the property's finish and fittings - even down to supplying complementary slippers to protect their new Oak floors. Lovely friendly contact before arriving and a great welcome when we did. We arrived too late for afternoon tea so Anne gave us some homemade Brownie, and it was lovely. Very well appointed and spacious room overlooking the woodland (also owned as part of the White House) including an array of drinks - approx 5/6 different types of tea. Homemade pastries and breads with a fabulous breakfast the following morning, after which my wife spent a couple of hours sunning herself on the flat roof sundeck on the wicker and leather seating. If you're in the area make sure you stay here - we will without fail if we are this way again.

Tips:

Ask for one of the (larger) upstairs Woodland View or Garden View rooms

7th June 2015:

We've just come back from a great stay at White Lodge, and I may as well cut to the chase: if you're looking for a B&B that's stunningly well appointed, beautifully located, pristinely presented – and that also has excellent breakfasts! – in the Sussex Downs, Lewes or Glyndebourne area, I'd recommend that you look no further. You can see from the exterior photo that the building is in a very modern style, but it's fabulously softened by the bucolic setting. We really enjoyed the luxury of the rooms, the attention to detail, and the warmth of care that we experienced from the kindest of hosts, Ann and Martin.

Tips:

We were only down for Glyndebourne which is about 7 miles away. Our room contained a neat, comprehensive file of information, with multiple copies of leaflets. It's under 14 miles to Brighton and within striking distance of so many places to see and things to do.

26th May 2015:

We booked one night’s stay at The White Lodge simply as a means to attend Glyndebourne without having to rush back to London after the performance, a quick stopover. We certainly were not expecting leaving it would be so difficult! The property is stunning, a lovingly restored mid century villa in the middle of the countryside, amidst manicured lawns and acres of forest, in perfect idyllic countryside quietness, but only 10 minutes from the nearest train station. The warm welcome from the owners, Ann and Martin, far exceed our expectations and we ended up having tea and homemade cake on the sun terrace within minutes of arriving, certainly helping to ease ourselves into the bank holiday mood. The property is large, totally newly refurbished to a very high standard, with equally sizeable, extremely well appointed guestrooms, kitted out impeccably for a perfect 5 star feel. All amenities are provided, from coffee to snacks in the room, the bathrooms are huge with great showers and everything you may need for your stay, and the bedrooms have the most comfortable bed and linen we have ever found in any hotel. And there’s also a large flat panel TV in each room and free wifi throughout of course. You’re made to feel at home from the start (you even get a pair of slippers), with access to the lounge, kitchen and indeed the owner’s great knowledge of the surroundings and plenty of tips to improve your visit of the South Downs, a stunning part of England only an hour away from London. Nothing is too much trouble for the Ann and Martin, helping with cabs, directions and even supplying my wife with an extra pair of tights as hers (which they didn’t charge for) snagged on our way out to the opera. Breakfast was a gastronomic feast, local produce such as a wonderful cheese selection an organic eggs laid the day before, as well as homemade breads (the sourdough was light and fluffy) and freshly mixed smoothies. We enjoyed our stay and will definitely come back, this time allowing far more time to enjoy the area and the hospitality. Ann and Martin are also great company, and we had so much fun getting to know them, that they even gave us a lift back to the station so we could chat some more. We will be back.

Tips:

Spend more time than us to explore the local farm shops, breweries and take in the scenery with long hikes!

It felt like home from home without the work. We were made most welcome in this beautiful country setting, which was immediately relaxing. Nothing was too much trouble & the home made cakes scrumptious. We will recommend White Lodge to our friends. Thank you Anne and Martin.

Tips:

White Lodge was very convenient for our visit to Glyndebourne. Only a few miles down the road.

White lodge is a beautiful, luxurious and tranquil place to stay. Ann and Martin make every effort from the very start to make the stay as relaxed and enjoyable as could be possible. The rooms are furnished to the highest standards and the breakfast was cooked to order and perfect every time. The lodge has a relaxed, informal feel about it. You are made to feel at home throughout. The little touches such as cake left in the room on arrival are nice gestures that people remember. I will definitely go back as soon as I can.

We have already recommended White lodge to members of our family who sometimes have reason to stay in the Lewes area.

We discovered white lodge only through a relative being in hospital just up the road. And what a find! We were welcomed with tea and cake, shown around the beautiful home and taken to our gorgeous room (my kind of room!) breakfast was amazing and my overall stay (apart from my brother being in hospital) was perfect and both Ann and Martin made us feel incredibly welcome and took some stress of our minds. I'd love to stay here again in the future!

Tips:

The rainbow inn up the road served delicious food, highly recommend their sausage and mash! Lewes is also a beautiful town to visit.

An excellent B&B which is run by Ann & Martin who made us feel very welcome on our arrival. The hotel is surrounded by woodland and gardens. Our bedroom with its King size bed was spotless, as was the hotel itself. Nothing was to much for Ann, she was there to greet us with a cup of coffee and cakes when we came back from a day out. Ann & Martin are very knowledgeable about the area, with advice on local gardens, antique places, restaurants etc. When we go back again to this part of east Sussex we will look no further than this wonderful B&B.

Tips:

The B&B is ideally situated close to the Town Centre of Lewes, with its array of antique shops, and plenty of places to eat and drink. The coastal resorts of Brighton, Eastbourne, Hastings etc are all within easy reach. Arundel Castle and gardens is well worth a visit, with lots of antique shops and eateries in Arundel. There are quite a few restaurants near to the B&B, The Rainbow Inn, The five Bells and our favourite the Cock Inn are all within a 5/10 minute drive away.

A first class establishment that beats all 5 star hotels in the area! I stayed here on business for meetings in Brighton and was amazed at the quality of the facilities (the room and bathroom were just stunning) and the quiet location. I have no hesitation to recommend this B&B to both business and leisure travellers and will be using White lodge for every stay in the area from now on.
